Greater Things

One of the conditions of using the name of Jesus is to be a practicing Christian. In John 16:26-27 we read,

“In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from the Father.”

Not everyone has access to using the name of Jesus, or to the other gifts of power that God has given to us. Note this about Simon the magician in Acts 8:19-20,

“Saying, ‘Give this authority to me as well…’ But, Peter said to him, ‘You have no part or portion in this matter, for your heart is not right before God.’”

You have to be in right standing with God to be able to use His gifts of power. Your heart has to be right. There is this very funny story concerning the improper use of the name of Jesus in Acts 19:13-16,

“But also, some of the Jewish exorcists, who went from place to place, attempted to name over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.”

“Seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. And the evil spirit answered and said to them, “I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?”

“And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaped on them and subdued all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.”

That was a teachable moment. These were Jewish exorcists, but not Jewish believers in Yeshua. They wanted the power using the Name, without the commitment to His name. Make sure that you are committed to God, and you will aptly use these gifts of the power of heaven.
