Using the Name of Jesus
As with using someone’s name that we know, if we know them personally, we can develop a more familiar and common usage of their name. We should develop a more common usage of the name of Jesus. There are conditions and rules in using His name. In Acts 3:2-8,
“And a man who had been lame from his mother’s womb was being carried along, whom they used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, in order to beg alms of those who were entering the temple. When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking to receive alms. But Peter, along with John, fixed his gaze on him and said, “Look at us!”
“And he began to give them his attention, expecting to receive something from them.
“But Peter said, “I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene — walk!”
“And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. With a leap he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.”
Here, a healing occurred because Peter properly used the name of Jesus. It’s then verified further in verse 16, with this explanation,
“And on the basis of faith in His name, it is the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all.”
Whenever you are in prayer, you should use the name of Jesus to start and finish what you are praying and asking for.
I remember a minister who got a handle on this later in his life. His congregation was shocked at how often he used the name of Jesus in his messages. It resulted in a complete transformation of both him and his ministry. But, he went through most of his ministry career, without ever taking advantage of what was right in front of him.
This same thing happens to most Spirit filled Christians today. They simply forget to use the simple tools of prayer, the tools that Jesus Himself gave us to use.
