Faith & the Cure for Worry
The cause of worry is generally from a lack of faith. If the doctor came to you and said, “You’ve got something wrong with you, that most people don’t know can be easily cured”. He then hands you a pill, and all your symptoms instantly go away. If that were possible, you’d want that pill, wouldn’t you? If you are a worrier, then Jesus has a pill for you, it is called Faith. In Matthew 6:25-31, Jesus gives us the cure for worry.
“For this reason, I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
“Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?
“And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?
“And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.
“But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith!
31, “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’
Notice in verse 31, Jesus says not to complain. Complaining can take many forms, and this style of complaining, Jesus says is from a lack of faith.
Faith controls what we say, and what we say controls our faith. Once we learn this eternal fact about words, the best way to increase our faith at times, is to stop talking altogether. If you don’t have anything good to say about your situation, then don’t say anything at all.
Faith starts in the heart. All thoughts, words, and actions, proceed from the heart. In Matthew 15:18-19, Jesus explains where these actions originate,
“But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.”
Worry starts in the heart. Worry is a seed, like faith is a seed. Look how He says that all seeds start small, and if allowed to grow, can become very great in size.
“He presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; and this is smaller than all other seeds, but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that THE BIRDS OF THE AIR come and NEST IN ITS BRANCHES.” Matthew 13:31-32
Mustard seeds are very small seeds, but when allowed to grow, can become vast canopies for the birds of the air. Jesus teaches us that faith starts small, but if properly nurtured and encouraged to grow, can grow and turn into very great faith!
Notice the farmers in the fields? They plant corn seeds, then encourage them to grow. Nitrogen is added to the soil, the soil is cultivated, bugs are eliminated, and the land is watered regularly. Later in the year, the result is a great harvest. I can tell you, from having lived in farm country for 40 years, that farmers hover over their crops, and help them mature as a nursing mother.
So you too must hover over your faith. Listen to the Word preached with faith daily. Read the Word daily. These activities will nurture, water and protect your faith. Your faith will increase and grow, and will fill your heart with the kind of faith that is pleasing to God. Your words then will follow your great faith, and you will find yourself speaking great things, and acting on your increasing faith.
The cure for worry is faith. The cure for complaining is faith. The cure for the heart is faith, and the cure for the tongue is faith.
Our prayer for today,
Father, put a watch over my mouth that I do not sin against You, and speak worry or lack. I now declare that my faith is increasing, and doubt and worry are decreasing, in Jesus’ name, amen!
