OUR 29TH YEAR OF MINISTRY

The Spirit of the Lord

Jesus used prophecies many times from the scriptures to point to Himself or to other future events.  It happens so frequently in the Gospels, that one tends to overlook it.  Fortunately for us, most bibles have all the Old Testament quotations in all capital letters.  Notice it here in Luke 4:15-21,

“And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.

And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read.

And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, (in Isaiah 61:1-2)

And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him.

And He began to say to them,

This is such an encouraging teaching of His.  First, as He quotes from the book of Isaiah, He says that word “Gospel or “good news”.  Shown here, we read the word Gospel, in other translations, it says, “good news”.  When you see the word Gospel, translate it and meditate on that thought.  The  Gospel means Good news!  It is good news that Jesus brings, in many ways and on a multitude of levels.

Then He continues His teaching, saying that this prophecy is being fulfilled right in front of you!  He explains that He came for the following:

  1. To give good news to the poor and downtrodden and afflicted.
  2. To give freedom to those who are prisoners of bad habits, or lifestyles, or addictions.
  3. To give spiritual insight to those who have none, and to heal.
  4. To give freedom to those who are oppressed.
