If I told you that a horn will make a call to you from heaven, the word picture in your head might be of a trumpet in a high school band, or a calvary bugler in a movie. But according to God, prophecy, and scripture, the trumpet plays an extraordinary role in your future.
In ancient times, a trumpet, often called a shofar, played a practical daily function in the tribes of Israel. The camp would have the shofar blown to gather at the tent of meeting, or give a blast to move forward in the morning, or celebrate festival holiday. Every blast of the trumpet or shofar, also called the “sound of the rams horn” was distinctive and different, and sent a code to people or soldiers over a vast area.
In todays modern US Army, there are 25 standard bugle calls. The most famous calls include Reveille; waking up the troops, Retreat; leave the battle or lower the flag, and Taps; used at the end of the day or at military memorial ceremonies. Each sound of the trumpet or shofar contains a package of information, and not just a single note of instruction. You can hear the sound for miles, delivering information over a vast plain or territory.
A TRUMPET FROM GOD
The words ‘trumpet, trumpets, and rams horn’ are found in the bible over 100 times. The first time this is found is in Exodus 19:16-19, three months after Moses led Israel out from Egypt.
“So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.
Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because Yahweh (the Lord) descended upon it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked violently. When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him with thunder.”
In the oceans, whales make great sounds which pulse through the water for miles. The sandhill cranes here early in the morning give giant blasts that sound loud and prehistoric. The sound of God’s trumpet is God’s voice, commanding and reverberating like galactic shock waves through the entire cosmos.
GOD’S EMPIRE IS VAST
God’s empire constitutes all of what we know that exists; heaven, earth and the universe. In these two tangible realms, material and spiritual, God speaks and commands. His thundering voice seems loud to us, but is necessary for His instructions to be heard by heaven and hell, by angels and men. In Matthew 6:10, Jesus gives us a prayer, where He says,
“Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
God instructs all of heaven and earth. God also directs the future of men and angels as laid out in biblical prophecy.
From imperial heaven, men hear God as a loud trumpet or thunder. Each trumpet contains not just a single command, but a series of instructions for His holy angels, sometimes the fallen angels, and for creation itself. Heaven, God the Father, Jesus, and God’s holy angels have a spiritual language all their own.
When the apostle Paul recounted his first experience with Jesus. He heard Jesus speak to him from heaven, as we read in Acts 22:6-9, “But it happened that as I was on my way, approaching Damascus about noontime, a very bright light suddenly flashed from heaven all around me, and I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me,
‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’
And I answered, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me,
‘I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you are persecuting.’
And those who were with me saw the light, to be sure, but did not understand the voice of the One who was speaking to me.” When God speaks to one man or a group, He allows His voice to be understood by them, while those unqualified, hear only loud thunder. This depiction is given in Revelation 1:10-11, as described by the apostle John. Notice that the first conversation is with Jesus, while the second voice is with the angel giving John a tour of heaven.
GOD’S VOICE COMMANDS SOUND LIKE LOUD TRUMPETS
“I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like the sound of a trumpet, saying,
“Write in a book what you see…”
In Revelation 4:1, “After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven, and the first voice which I had heard, like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after these things.”
Both Jesus and the angel sounded similar to the human ear, having the sound of a trumpet. Again, John writes in Revelation 8:2, 6-7.
“And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them…”
“And the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound them. The first sounded, and there came hail and fire, mixed with blood, and they were thrown to the earth; and a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.”
John’s witness is that these trumpets are commands from God. They are given in the form and sound of a trumpet. Yet what follows is a series of plagues that fall on the earth and on mankind. These trumpet sounds, as they are released by the angels, have in them specific commands to nature, to produce fire, hail and blood.
THE NEXT TRUMPET YOU HEAR WILL BE CALLING FOR YOU
The next prophecy to be fulfilled from the Mosaic pattern is the Feast of Trumpets, which always occurs in the fall. The first four springs feasts have already been prophetically fulfilled with Jesus as the Passover Lamb, Unleavened Bread, First Fruits, and Pentecost. The last three, Trumpets, Atonement, and Tabernacles, are fall feasts and will soon start to come to pass. Trumpets is the Rapture, when the righteous dead and the church are called to meet Jesus in the air. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 reads,
“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.”
What will be the imperial command at the sound of the trumpet? “COME UP HERE!”. The righteous will hear the words, while the rest of humanity will just hear a loud, indistinguishable, trumpet sound. Are you ready to hear the trumpet of God?
